Technical Service Manager

JOB SUMMARY:

The successful candidate will lead the Sweet Flavors Europe Technical team; being a towering strength in delivering a pipeline of projects successfully and setting the strategy for product introductions & innovation requirements. The preferred candidate will be self-motivated, a natural leader and developer of people and have a questioning, challenging mind-set. They will enjoy working in a multi-discipline, cross-site team and be comfortable in joining Sales Account Managers in presenting to customers.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential duty is delivering the fast-moving pipeline of projects through a team of ca. 7 people, mainly based in Milton Keynes, which consists primarily of applications technologists. In specific, the candidate :

  • Manages the Sweet Applications team and multiple customer projects and department activities; manages multiple constantly changing priorities through organization and team orientated leadership strategies to ensure that projects are completed appropriately in a timely manner; focuses resources on meeting the objectives set by the Technical Director
  • Determines feasibility of project objectives and timelines; communicates expected outcomes and/or alternatives to sales team; supports business unit strategic objectives 
  • Identifies and focuses resources on new technologies, ingredients, processes and food/flavor trends that will provide innovative solutions to customer and industry challenges; recognizes problems and gathers and interprets significant data to find creative solutions to complex issues; well versed in Sensient product portfolio.
  • Identifies longer-term projects – product ranges, plant process improvements, innovation requirements – and to runs these through cross-functional teams or through influence of other teams.
  • Utilizes good communication skills, both written and oral; develops and delivers presentations to customers, internal colleagues and management; organizes and prepares comprehensive reports of technical plans, progress and future work; ensures Beverage libraries are well maintained and accessible.
  • Serves as a technical resource for customers and internal teams; assists the customer by providing solutions for their product/process opportunities; educates customers on Sensient resources and technologies.
  • Collaborates with Sensory, Analytical, Purchasing, Planning, Quality, Production, Regulatory and other departments to provide technical support and obtain assistance when needed; acts as internal advocate for customers in answering urgent customer queries.
  • Collaborates with Sensient’s global sites to share technologies and information. Coordinates support for International customers between International sites. 
  • Collaborates closely with Marketing to facilitate the launch of joint Marketing/Applications initiatives to our customers and to the broader Sales Team
  • Ensures a safe and professional working environment for technical staff; serves as or appoints liaison to Technical Safety Committee; complies with government and company safety directives
  • Comprehends individual staff abilities and strengths to best allocate resources to project work; develops technical and professional abilities of staff members through mentoring/coaching, counseling, feedback and personal development plans; recruits new team members.

  • Strategic outlook and ability to set product range and innovation needs.
  • Appreciation of regulatory and compliance frameworks of flavours and food industry.
  • Ability to work within short time-frames, stay focused under pressure and translate results directly into new products which meet our customer’s requirements.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

A Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Food Science/Technology is preferred.

At this level, the most important criteria are competencies commensurate with a long and varied career which includes project management, successful working through systems and line management.
