JOB SUMMARY:

 

Reporting to the R&D Manager, Savory Flavors; the Applications Technologist independently develops innovative food technologies and products in support of existing and new business growth opportunities for the Sensient Savory Flavors business. The Technologist will focus on new innovation with Flavorists, and will require experience and knowledge in the technical and scientific areas of the flavor industry.  

 

Further, to generate new products that will establish and sustain Sensient Flavors in leading market position, a thorough understanding of the trends within the flavor industry is required.

 

The candidate must have a strong technical background and be able to apply prior learning or scientific principles to new situations.  Having experience in soups, sauces, dressings and plant protein (Vegan) applications is preferred.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Conducts hands on evaluation and development on bench 50-75% of time; manages multiple projects and tasks with changing priorities; recognizes problems, gathers and interprets significant data to find creative solutions to complex issues.  Recommends new solutions for customer requests where appropriate through familiarity with Sensient product catalog and databases.
  • Identifies and focuses resources on new technologies, ingredients, processes and food/flavor trends that will provide innovative solutions to customer and industry challenges.
  • Interacts with academia and other outside sources to keep current on technology trends and potential application to business.
  • Support long-range business strategies on research and technology to meet divisional growth expectations.
  • Effectively communicates the features and benefits of new Sensient Savory products through presentations to customers, sales and internal management.  Manages multitask projects and leads cross functional teams.
  • Enters and maintains accurate and thorough records of work, including project status, formulations, process instructions, flavor evaluations, flavor and application libraries and supporting documents such as customer technical data sheets, nutrition facts, shipment documentation and other as required.
  • Collaborates with Creative, Sensory, Analytical, Purchasing, Quality, Regulatory, Production, Marketing, Sales, other innovation groups and other department teams to ensure product development meets benchmarks set by Technical Director.  Leads cross functional team activities.
  • Serves as technical resource for customers and internal teams; effectively communicates features and benefits of Sensient Savory new technology through presentations to customers, sales and management.  Travels to support customer projects, demos, production or to participate in trade shows or continuing education.
  • Participates in formal Sensory panels as well as day to day organoleptic evaluations/screening of flavors and application prototypes.
  • Conducts testing of Savory application products and/or flavors as appropriate including basic analytical, process, stability and shelf life testing.  Proficient in operating multiple pieces of equipment on bench and in pilot plant per SOP’s.
  • Communicates effectively to keep account manager, customer and the Applications Manager apprised of project status.  Ensures that projects are completed and submissions made in a timely manner and manages expectations with account manager and customer.
  • Expands technical and professional knowledge through collaboration with internal teams, mentors, customer interaction and professional development seminars, trade shows or technical workshops as agreed on by Technical Services Manager.
  • Assists in developing technical ability of R&D Staff through coaching, feedback and joint project assignments.  Participates in training visitors (sales, affiliates, new hires).
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and professional environment; complies with government and company safety directives.

 

 EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Master Degree or BS in food science, chemistry or related technical area and a minimum of 10 years’ experience in the food industry with a background in product development. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of food ingredients, processing and flavor application with expertise in key industry market products and ability to accurately formulate finished food products. 
  • Thorough understanding of the trends within the flavor industry.
  • Experience and knowledge in the technical and scientific areas of the flavor industry.  
  • Excellent organoleptic skills and knowledge of sensory language required.  Must be competent to deliver formal presentations.  Must possess excellent mathematical skills, reading comprehension and proficiency in required computer systems including internal custom programs.
