This position is responsible for the efficient and safe operation of the Chili Sterilizer and Mill equipment in the Chili department. The Steam Sterilization Lead ensures the line performs to expected production throughput while maintaining product quality and safety that meets customer and company standards. In addition to operating the line this position is the technical expert on line operations and will be responsible for normal preventative maintenance on the equipment.


  1. Must perform inspections of packaging components to provide assurance that products meet defined customer specifications.

  2. Sets up equipment parameters based on packaging formula set by the planning department to meet customer order requirements. Utilizes PLC’s and panel views on the equipment to setup run configuration.

  3. Ensures quick and efficient startup of both the Steam Sterilizer and Mill to minimize downtime. Oversee and ensure the production line does not stop between shift changes and that the incoming Steam Sterilization Lead has been briefed and assumed responsibility.

  4. Responsible for trouble shooting, basic maintenance, repair and setup of Steam Sterilizer and Mill equipment to ensure maximum productivity.

  5. Maintains equipment in good running order to ensure continuous operation that will meet required daily production throughput.

  6. Replaces Sifters Screens as needed.  Ensures that when screens are changes that all sliders are in place and that each screen has the proper amount of cleaning cubes.  Does not change screens without first getting consulting with Shift Supervisor.

  7. Responsible to ensure proper tags are on packaging materials. 

  8. Checks and documents that the line is filling to proper weights.

  9. Replaces Williams Mill screen as needed.

  10. Ensures and documents proper profiles are used to meet the requirements of our SOP.

  11. Makes line equipment adjustments as necessary to ensure maximum line efficiency.

  12. Takes and documents sample collection for micro testing of raw goods.

  13. Provides feedback and support for maintaining accurate policies and procedures within the department.

  14. Provides training for assigned department employees to ensure their knowledge and understanding of all policies and procedures relating to the quality, safety and productivity for the assigned areas.

  15. Washes all used sifter and mill screens promptly after the screens have been changed.

  16. Responsible to ensure that work areas are maintained in a neat and orderly condition, including department shift end cleanup, 5S and continuous improvement.

  17. Assists the Supervisor in a proactive approach to solving problems within the assigned area. Suggest improvements regarding productivity, safety and minimizing product loss.

  18. Ensure that all products are produced in a manner that conforms to all product specifications for each customer.

  19. Follows and enforces company policies with specific attention to safety (LOTO), HACCP, and food safety. Safely follows Company Lockout/Tag out policy when performing product changes, sanitation and clearing jams.

  20. Ensures that all HACCP procedures are followed and that all findings are inspected and documented.

  21. Operates a forklift to perform assigned work or to relieve others.

  22. Flexible to work within other departments or on other shifts as directed.

  23. Performs any other duties as assigned by Shift Supervisors or other members of management.

  24. Performs equipment PM’s as scheduled.

  25. Ensures that all milled batches of product are stored in the proper location as designated by the Warehouse Supervisor.  Ensures that all batches are scanned into the inventory system.

  26. Daily performs JDE inventory related transactions, Cycle Counting Inventory in SDF/.Net and Forklift Operation

  27. Follows the schedule according to the sequence or priority set by the Production Scheduler.  Does not deviate from schedule unless approved by Shift Supervisor.

  28. Accounts for all tools needed to operate production line.

  29. Performs Reclassifications and Work Order Completions to account for all products used and produced.

  30. Performs a row counts on all rows that milled product was put into on the operators shift.  If row count is off, makes the correction and informs the supervisor.  The completed row count is turned into the Chili Inventory Specialist.

  31. Performs Magnet Checks as required by procedure when dumping, or otherwise ensures that person assigned to dumping has checked magnets.

  32. Performs Pre-Op checks according to policy. This applies to Pre-production, post-sanitation and cleanouts due to product changes

  33. Notifies Shift Supervisor of any leaks, or repairs in the milling area. Repairs leaks and minor repairs as directed by supervisor. Working knowledge of hand tools to perform tasks.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Have good Mechanical/ electrical skills/aptitude

  • Trouble shooting/ problem solving skills to ensure line runs efficiently with limited downtime

  • Self-Motivated and willing to learn and adapt to a variety of situations and ability to learn quickly

  • Good planning skills and attention to details

  • Good communication skills (oral and written)

  • Leadership Qualities-Must be able to lead a crew of five and capable of filling in for a line Supervisor as needed

  • Work well with other and promote a team environment with high integrity and commitment to continuous improvement and manufacturing excellence

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.  Ability to remain standing for 8 or more hours per shift.  Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift grasp, talk, hear and have good vision. May occasionally have to safely roll 315 pound drums onto and off pallets.

  • Ability to work all Shifts, rotations and weekends

Environmental Conditions:

Work performed will be in all areas of the Turlock Facility. These areas frequently subject employee to extreme temperatures ranging from 35 to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, loud noises, airborne food particles (dust), and forklift fumes.  

Safety Considerations:

Includes operating a forklift in a safe manor, working safely around heavy forklift traffic, lifting properly when asked to do repetitive lifting/stacking, wearing applicable Personal Protective Equipment, and following all Safety Regulations.



High School Diploma or GED Required


  • Maintenance mechanic/ electrician in food manufacturing experience highly preferred.

  • Experience running packaging equipment/ robotics is a plus.

  • Manufacturing environment experience and working knowledge of food manufacturing concepts such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s), food safety, HACCP, standard operating procedures (SOP’s), LOTO and safe work practices.

  • Working knowledge of PLC and panel view operations, limit switches, relays, proximity sensors, photo sensing devices, electronic device calibrations, voltage meters, preventative maintenance work.
